Eagle Scout rock star creating videogame based on classic game he played at camp

When Dan and Mac Reynolds were kids, they spent time most summers at Scout camp.

Both went on to earn the rank of Eagle Scout from their units in the Las Vegas Area Council before creating Imagine Dragons, the rock band you may have heard of that Mac manages and Dan sings for.

But what they really wanted to do was create videogames.

Now they have.

Last Flag, the brothers’ game that will become available in 2026, is inspired by their experiences at Scout camp.

“Dan and I grew up in Scouts, and we’ve got a bunch of brothers, and we used to play capture the flag in the woods at night,” Mac, who is also the CEO and co-founder of Night Street Games, told Variety magazine. “And it’s kind of a quintessential childhood experience.”

Dan echoed his brother’s comments in an interview with WBUR-FM in Boston.

“Last Flag is essentially hide-and-seek with a flag,” Dan says. “So Mac and I both grew up in Scouting, and we would go to Scout camp every summer for a couple of weeks. And my favorite part about Scout camp was we would play capture the flag in the woods.”

In Last Flag, players can choose from a variety of characters, including one named Scout.

A classic camp game

Capture the flag has long been a popular game at Scout camps and meetings.

The game’s origins likely come from the fact that literally capturing your opponent’s flag was seen as a devastating act during real warfare.

From a blog post on the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s website:

… to a soldier during the Civil War, capturing a flag was deadly serious. In even the smallest skirmish during the Civil War, a thick cloud of gun smoke quickly obliterated the action on the battlefield, making it impossible to see any directives ordered by an officer. Thus, the man carrying the regimental flag, the color bearer, became vitally important. Every soldier on both sides knew the importance of always knowing where the flag was and used the color bearer’s position as his own, moving forward or back and maintaining order, depending on what the color bearer did. Without the color bearer, chaos took over.

Mac says Last Flag is designed to bring to the gaming world what made capture the flag so memorable for him as a kid.

“… real hiding, real finding, the thrill of nature, being a hero, sneaking around …” he told Variety. “We started from that core place of ‘What does a pure capture the flag game really feel like?’”

Each game of Last Flag will last 20 minutes or less. Players will compete in a classic game of capture the flag with two teams of five, with 10 possible characters to choose from.

Growing up as a Scout

Dan began writing songs when he was a 14-year-old Scout. He took piano and drum lessons and played saxophone, all while advancing up the ranks of Scouting.

“I was determined to be a musician and be myself and not have to sell out in any way of being something that’s not me,” he told Scout Life magazine back in 2015. “Don’t just try to fit into the box that people say is rock ’n’ roll.”

Dan earned the rank of Eagle Scout at 17, went on a two-year mission for the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 19, got married at 23 and became a father two years later, and co-founded a cancer-fighting charity at 26.

Last Flag is currently at the alpha testing phase. It will be available on Windows PC via the Steam
and Epic Games stores. A console version is still in development. Click here to learn more.
