Waves meet their match in Scout’s shoreline plan, plus other news in Scouting

Daniel Mills, an Eagle Scout from Winterville, North Carolina, is leading a conservation project to protect the eroding shoreline at Camp Boddie, a place he’s cherished since childhood.

His project involves installing 210 feet of “living shoreline” along the Pamlico Sound lagoon using QuickReef Defender sills — a coastal structure designed to protect shorelines and encourage oyster growth. These sills are made from recycled oyster shells and marl limestone, which help reduce wave impact and prevent erosion.

Partnering with local organizations, Daniel’s effort also includes planting vegetation to stabilize the banks.

This project is one of two he’s completing to earn the Distinguished Conservation Service Award — potentially making him the first recipient in Eastern Carolina.

Rudransh Bhattacharya, from Troop 49 in Lynnwood, Washington, turned his Eagle Scout project into a meaningful gift for dogs at a local shelter.

With support from more than 30 volunteers and local businesses, he constructed colorful play structures from recycled tires, dedicating more than 350 hours to the project.

These structures now provide exercise and enrichment for dogs like Daphne (pictured above) as they await adoption.

Scouts take on highway cleanup and Memorial Day

The Scouts of Troop 4065 of Garrettsville, Ohio, are actively serving their community by adopting and cleaning a 2.5-mile section of State Route 82 through Ohio’s Adopt-A-Highway program.

In their first spring cleanup, eight Scouts collected eight bags of trash, with plans to continue the effort twice a year.

The troop also recently honored veterans by planting flowers and placing flags at local cemeteries in observance of Memorial Day.
