Sea Scouts sail to glory, plus other news in Scouting this week

Greek Fire, a racing team made up of Sea Scouts, made history by winning the 38th annual Harvest Moon Regatta, a 147-nautical-mile race from Galveston to Port Aransas, Texas. They outraced 83 adult-manned vessels on their way to victory.

The win didn’t come without its challenges. The team suffered a handful of equipment failures, such as a broken spinnaker in the middle of the night, forcing the crew to improvise repairs under low visibility and gaining valuable experience in the process.

Scout brings color to community

Patrick Heckler, an Eagle Scout candidate from Bloomville, Ohio, completed his service project by installing two specialized scenic viewers designed to help people with color blindness experience a broader range of colors.

Inspired by his own color vision deficiency, Heckler raised $8,500 to fund the EnChroma devices, now located at Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve in Bloomville and Steyer Nature Preserve in neighboring Tiffin. These are two of only three such viewers in the entire state.

The devices also enhance colors for those with typical vision. A dedication event celebrating the project will be held this weekend, with opportunities to test the viewers and enjoy fall scenery.
