Eagle Scout Will Johns partnered with physical therapists at a school for children with special needs to create custom motorized wheelchairs for two students.

Little Light House Tulsa provides tuition-free classes, along with special education and therapeutic services for children and their families.

Will used supplies from the Open Wheelchair Foundation, an organization that aims to give children access to mobility and independence without the prohibitive cost of buying a commercial wheelchair.

Scout goes international with Eagle project

Yousof Alsum, a 16-year-old Eagle Scout with Troop 399 from San Jose, California, took his service project overseas to East Africa.

Last summer, Yousof completed an ambitious project by building two classrooms, a computer room, a library and a “human foosball” field at a school in the Jendele village in Zanzibar, an island in Tanzania.

Inspired by his mother’s trip to the region, Yousof wanted to help address the lack of educational facilities there. He raised $31,000 through fundraising, involving Scouts from multiple countries and partnering with a Tanzanian charity.

The project, which took eight days to complete, was a rare international endeavor for his local council. Yousof celebrated the success with a farewell party, feeling proud of his project’s impact on the community.

“I always knew I wanted my project to have a larger impact,” said Yousof. “I knew that there were places internationally that really could use my help.”
