‘Tis the season to give back, plus other news in Scouting

Life Scout Sophia Moland of Troop 219 in Rusk County, Texas, is working toward her Eagle Scout rank with a holiday project benefiting Henderson Interchurch Ministries, a local donation center. She will host a free community Christmas dinner at Henderson’s Civic Center for those facing food insecurity.

Sophia has a passion for cooking and has raised funds through her small business, Sophia’s Gluten-Free Bake Shop. Local businesses are also contributing food and treats for the dinner.

“I chose to do this because I love cooking,” she says. “It’s been a passion of mine since I became gluten free. I couldn’t really find food for myself, so I decided to make myself food. I’ve never been food insecure, but knowing what it’s like not to have the best food at the best times, to bring someone a warm meal, especially during the holidays, and a high-quality meal was important to me.”

Virginia Cub Scout Pack making service projects a priority

Pack 888 in Fort Hunt, Virginia, is making a meaningful impact in its community through various service projects.

The Scouts have focused on alleviating hunger by preparing and delivering breakfast bags for a local shelter. Each bag contained nonperishable items and a handmade picture, ensuring those in need had breakfast and felt cared for.

The Scouts also teamed up with the nonprofit Be the Good, which fills 28 small food pantries to support local families. The pack helped make sandwiches and assembled care packages.

The Scouts have also participated in environmental conservation efforts, labeling storm drains to raise awareness about water-quality issues. A resident commended them for their positive influence in the community.

Pack 888 plans to continue its service work and hopes to inspire other groups to join its mission of making a difference.
