It’s been nearly three years since we told you about siblings Sydney and Dylan Yee, two Scouts BSA members who nearly stole the show on the American Ninja Warrior Junior TV show.
This summer, Sydney is done with the kid stuff. She’s competing on American Ninja Warrior, and in the process generating some great publicity for Scouting America.
Shortly after she turned 15, Sydney (who’s now 16 years old) filmed her appearances on the show. She initially appeared on the July 1 episode of the show’s 16th season. One of the youngest competitors of the season, she advanced to the next round of competition in a thrilling runoff at the very end of the episode.
Her next appearance will be on July 22.
The show was filmed at Universal Studios Hollywood last year, so Sydney already knows how it turned out. Since she’s unable to share any spoilers, all she could tell us is how much fun she had throughout the experience.
“It was a dream to be on ANW,” she says. “I got to meet so many cool people and run the course that I have watched since I was 8 years old.”
A fierce competitor, a loyal member of Scouts BSA
Sydney is a member of Troop 7332 in Columbus, Ohio. Though Dylan, a member of Troop 332, was not yet old enough to compete in ANW when Sydney filmed her episodes, he and both of their parents are featured multiple times during the show, showing their support of Sydney.
Also mentioned multiple times in the show is the fact that Sydney is a Scout.
“I really think it’s those survival skills she learned in Boy Scouts,” host Akbar Gbaja-Biamila noted in the seconds after Sydney clinched a berth in the semifinals. “It really paid off and she survived this runoff.”
The Yees belong to Movement Lab Ohio, which specializes in Ninja Warrior, parkour and obstacle course racing. They have had the opportunity to train with Michelle Warnky Buurma, who appeared on seven seasons of American Ninja Warrior.
When she’s not training for Ninja Warrior, Sydney and Dylan are excelling in Scouts BSA. Sydney was recently elected senior patrol leader for her troop. She also staffed a National Youth Leadership Training session as a troop guide.
“I think those leadership roles really helped me gain confidence, which helped with the interviews that the show does,” she says.
Scout skills on display
The show seems to love playing up the fact that Sydney’s a Scout.
“Sydney Yee’s the ultimate overachiever,” went a voiceover during the July 1 episode. “She’s a member of Mensa, a Boy Scout …” (cue footage of Sydney reciting the Scout Oath and Law with the rest of her troop) … “and now, she’s a Ninja.”
After showing footage of Sydney running track and field, competing in swimming and playing in the orchestra, Sydney says, “My favorite activities are Ninja and Boy Scouts.”
“I got into Scouts because of my brother,” she tells the cameras. “I went on a couple of campouts with him, and I was like, ‘Whoa, I really wish I could do this type of stuff.’”
The show then shows footage of Sydney and her fellow Scouts on a campout, working on first-aid skills and prepping for a hike.
“I have learned so many cool things, from learning how to do first aid to learning how to survive by myself in the woods,” Sydney tells the cameras. “Scouts is just amazing.”
Sydney came up a tiny bit short in her first run of the episode, but did well enough to qualify for the runoff, where she defeated her opponent to advance to the next round.
“I am so excited to be moving on to the semifinals,” she says. “Getting to not only compete in the qualifying round but also in the semifinals as a rookie was a dream come true.”
