The Chiefs’ punter is an Eagle Scout, plus more good news from this week

Kansas City Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, a four-year NFL veteran out of the University of Florida, is an Eagle Scout.

Townsend earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2014, when he was a member of Troop 200 in Apopka, Florida. In 2023, he was named a Ewing Kauffman Distinguished Eagle Scout by the Heart of America Council.

Townsend’s career highlights include a 68-yard punt in 2023, along with 74- and 76-yard punts in 2022. He averaged 50.42 yards per punt in 2022, the highest in franchise history.

And while no one will confuse him with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, he does have this pass completion to his credit:

Scouts, volunteers recognize the BSA’s 114th birthday

The BSA turned 114 yesterday, and Scouts, families, volunteers and other friends of the program recognized it in their own way.

In Newville, Pa., Troop 174 was recognized for their service to their community in this article from the Newville Valley Times Star.

In Rockford, Ill., the Blackhawk Area Council had started a continuous fire display, according to WIFR TV 23.

And don’t forget about Scout Sunday, which is usually held in February to coincide with the BSA’s anniversary.

Community college helps Scouts BSA members earn Plumbing merit badge

Scouts who earn the Plumbing merit badge learn how proper plumbing makes life easier and safer at home, at work and in public places.

Northern Maine Community College recently hosted Troop 177 in Washburn, Maine, for a Plumbing class that helped them earn the badge and introduced the possibility of plumbing as a career.

“I love to see their eyes light up when they figure something out or discover something they never understood before,” says Troop 177 leader Loren Gordon. “There’s a sense of accomplishment, and these are concepts they can carry forward. Who knows where their futures will lead.”
