Calvin Johnson, former Detroit Lions receiver, presents award to Boy Scout

CalvinGivesAwardMegatron, meet MegaScout.

Calvin Johnson, the former Detroit Lions wide receiver with a Transformers-inspired nickname, presented the Calvin Johnson Jr. Peach of an Athlete Award last week to Jonathon Johnson, a Boy Scout in the Atlanta Area Council.

The award celebrates an Atlanta-area high school athlete who is involved in Scouting and is a role model in his community.

Jonathon, a junior at Westlake High School and member of Troop 2020 and Venturing Crew 1981, certainly qualifies for the honor. He’s an Eagle Scout and a member of the Chick-fil-A Youth Leadership Academy, the W. E. Dubois Intellectual Society, the Student Government Association and his school’s golf team. He belongs to the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. And he even owns a tutoring business called F’s to A’s Tutoring Program.

Even with all that involvement in school and sports, Jonathon — like many young people across the country — still makes time for Scouting.

Calvin Johnson makes time for Scouting, too. In March, he announced his retirement from the National Football League after nine spectacular seasons, and now he’s dedicating time to improving the lives of young people.

Calvin Johnson, who grew up in Georgia and played college football at Georgia Tech, has been a major donor to the Atlanta Area Council for the past four years. Through his foundation, the former NFL star gives back to the community in impressive ways.

I wanted to briefly highlight the Peach of an Athlete Role Model Banquet where Jonathon Johnson received his award.

The banquet, hosted by the Atlanta Area Council, has been around for 32 years. The goal is to honor athletes who uphold the values of Scouting.

This year’s honorees included philanthropist and NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo, University of Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs, University of Georgia golfer Sylvie Brick and Mike Plant, executive vice president of the Atlanta Braves.

The Peach of an Athlete event is a great way to strengthen Scouting’s ties to the community and something that could be replicated by other councils across the country.
