Help your Cub Scouts build safety skills for life

Safety is the highest priority for Cub Scouts.

That’s why #CubChatLive recently welcomed back National Cub Scouting Commissioner Nilesh Shah for a detailed look at personal safety Adventures that span the Cub Scout ranks.

The importance of personal safety in Scouting

Lessons for youth on how to be safe are woven into every part of the Cub Scout program. Personal safety Adventures ensure Cub Scouts remember safety is key to everything they do in life (inside and outside of Scouting).

“If we are not paying attention to the safety of our Cubs, everything else is irrelevant,” Shah said in the episode. “[Personal safety], for me, is a very special Adventure because it really is fundamental to how we are stewards of our Cubs and their development.”

The Cub Scout program includes a personal safety Adventure for every rank. Detailed pack meeting plans help Scouts complete all requirements in a single, multirank meeting if they choose. Like all the latest Cub Scout leader resources, these plans walk adults through the entire meeting, offering structure and allowing for each pack’s specific needs.

What other resources are available for personal safety Adventures?

The Cub Scout team has designed tools to make sensitive topics easier to address. For example, “Protect Yourself” videos for each rank — Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos and Arrow of Light — introduce key ideas in a clear, age-appropriate way and can be shown during a pack meeting or reviewed at home with parents.

Additionally, activity stations and den breakouts included in the den leader resources help keep Cub Scouts engaged while covering topics like the buddy system, first aid, personal boundaries and more.

Shah emphasized the importance of involving parents early, preparing them for what their Cub Scouts will discuss and giving families the option to complete certain requirements at home.
