Every Scout deserves a leader who is confident and prepared to deliver the best Scouting experience possible. That’s why Scouting U has launched a new campaign for leaders who have direct contact with Scouts: Trained to Make a Difference.
The objective is simple but vital. Scouting U wants more Cubmasters, den leaders, Scoutmasters, assistant Scoutmasters and other relevant leaders to become fully trained for their roles.
Currently, fewer than 40% of leaders nationwide have completed position-specific training. The very achievable, very necessary goal is to raise that number to 55% in every council.
Director of Scouting University Wendy Kurten explained:
“With every position we hold, whether it’s a new job or a volunteer role in Scouting, success depends on knowing the tools and resources available to us. Training is the best way to gain those tools. When leaders are trained, both Scouts and leaders have stronger, safer and more rewarding experiences.”
And the research consistently shows units with trained leaders thrive. Trained leaders know how to use the Scouting methods effectively, feel more confident in their roles and, in turn, deliver a stronger program.
Empower yourself and fellow volunteers to deliver the best Scouting experience possible
In the next few months, volunteers will see new tools roll out to help you complete relevant training. Additionally, councils and territories will be asked to share survey feedback to help Scouting U better understand leaders’ needs and challenges.
The campaign will take center stage at Scouting U week at the Philmont Training Center, June 14-20, 2026, where participants will explore new ideas to make training more accessible for every volunteer. Bookmark the Philmont Training Center conference page to stay tuned for the when registration for 2026 conferences opens to volunteers.
Your next mission? Share this post with a volunteer who is starting their journey and needs some extra encouragement to complete training. Because when leaders are trained, Scouts fulfill their potential. And when Scouts thrive, they go on to change the world.
