Scouts Deliver Big in the Bay Area

Scouts in San Francisco’s Bay Area donated $15,357 to a food bank this month and presented an oversized check on a local television broadcast.

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley serves 500,000 families per month in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. The donation offered by Scouting America’s Pacific Skyline Council is enough for nearly 30,000 meals.

“Every one of us can make a difference, no matter how large or small,” Scout Executive Robert Nakagawa said. “For us as an organization, this is one of the key pillars as far as doing a good turn daily.”

Pine Pickup Pushes Ahead in Nebraska

Several TV stations in southeastern Nebraska reported on Scouts giving Christmas trees a new function.

Troop 282 from the Mid-America Council in Omaha created the Scouting for Trees program to repurpose unsold and discarded Christmas trees. Scouts pick up the trees and, rather than dumping them in landfills, recycle them for use as firewood, mulch, fish habitats, trail maintenance and more.

In 2014, Troop 8 from the Cornhusker Council in Lincoln joined the program, and two years ago, Troop 136 in Kearney, also of the Mid-America Council, launched its tree collection drive.

The pickups began on December 26 and will end January 10. Residents complete an online form to request the Scouting for Trees service. Then they place the trees outside for Scouting volunteers to haul away.

Here Are Your Kernels, Colonel

Scouting America’s Tidewater Council in Virginia made news this month for its popcorn gift.

As part of their annual fundraiser, Scouts included an option to donate popcorn to military families and veteran’s organizations. More than 1,200 Scouts from 87 Cub Scout packs, BSA troops and Venturing crews collected $91,980 in donations, which purchased about 3,500 containers of popcorn for the USO to distribute at Norfolk Naval Station, Norfolk International Airport, Fort Eustis and Langley Air Force Base.
