The Summit Bechtel Reserve | Registration Opens January 13
Located in West Virginia, the Summit is Scouting America’s most modern high-adventure base, offering zip lines, mountain biking, skateboarding, shooting sports and multiday ATV treks. One of its signature treks is the New River Experience. This paddle journey down the New River leads to thrilling whitewater rafting.
Northern Tier | Registration Opens January 14
Northern Tier spans millions of acres of wilderness in northern Minnesota and Canada and is the place for authentic canoe treks and wilderness camping. Choose six- to 12-day crew canoe treks, guided by experienced staff. In winter, specialty programs like dog sledding, ice fishing and snowshoeing are available.
Sea Base | Registration Opens January 15
Sea Base, with locations in the Bahamas, Florida Keys and U.S. Virgin Islands, offers 18 different ocean-going adventures. Choose from sailing programs, scuba programs or multi-adventure programs that include motorboating, ocean kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, snorkeling and environmental education. Want a challenge? Help restore a barrier reef at the Brinton Environmental Center.
Philmont Scout Ranch | Registration is Open
Philmont is the landmark of Scouting high adventure. Based in the mountains of northern New Mexico, it spans more than 220 square miles and features classic backpacking treks. Philmont’s long-standing traditions, highlighted by burro-packing, gold-panning and mountain lore, draw Scouts seeking a deep wilderness experience.
Timely Tips
Scouting America’s high-adventure experts have some tips to consider over the next few weeks in preparation for the opening day of registration for high-adventure outings.
- Determine which base fits your crew’s objective. Do you want fast-paced thrills (Summit), wilderness adventures (Northern Tier) or underwater discovery featuring vibrant coral reefs (Sea Base)?
- Hold a planning meeting now with your council high-adventure liaison. Talk about budgets, transportation and medical requirements.
- Don’t wait to register — you want to have plenty of time to plan.
- Consider a fundraiser. Early registration gives you several months to work on a fundraising effort in your community.
