Scout jumps into action to save hiker, plus other news in Scouting this week

Eleven-year-old Scout Quinn Bast played a critical role in saving a man’s life during a family hike in Breckenridge, Colorado.

When the man collapsed on the trail, Quinn’s recent CPR/AED training through his Scout troop kicked in. He quickly shouted, “Start chest compressions!” to his father, off-duty fire captain Jim Bast, and sprinted to a nearby brewery to retrieve an AED (automated external defibrillator). The device delivered a lifesaving shock, and the man began breathing again before emergency crews arrived.

Quinn’s quick thinking and calmness under pressure were key to the rescue, earning praise from his father and a doctor who confirmed the AED saved the man’s life.

Scout’s service project reaches children injured in war

Subadhra Krishnan, a 16-year-old Eagle Scout from Foster City, California, partnered with the nonprofit Heal Palestine to create over 30 care packages for injured Palestinian children receiving treatment in the U.S.

As part of her Eagle Scout service project, she led a team of volunteers in handcrafting gifts, including snacks, jewelry, origami and personalized notes translated into Arabic. The packages were sent to Ohio, where the children were attending a retreat.

The project aimed to offer comfort, joy and a sense of belonging to children affected by war. Though her Scout requirement is complete, Subadhra hopes to continue supporting the cause in the future.
