The National Venturing Committee offers two key tools to help Venturers lead their adventures

One of the Venturing program’s most important training modules has been revised and a brand-new training has been added to ensure that Venturers have the knowledge and skills they need to make their crews successful.

The Crew Officers Orientation has been updated to better help Venturers get to know the duties of Venturing officers. The new version is shorter, more engaging and more interactive than the previous version.

“The training is designed to help crew members understand the mechanics of how their crew should operate,” says National Venturing Committee Chair Julie Dalton. “The training not only works in the crew setting, but the leadership and planning tools they’ll learn are easily transferred to a Venturer’s non-Scouting life.”

Meanwhile, the all new Crew Officer Seminar training course is designed to help crews develop and execute an annual program.

The new training modules are designed to be delivered in person by crew officers during a Venturing crew meeting.

“The national Venturing team is committed to keeping Venturing relevant and engaging for today’s participants,” says 2024-25 National Venturing President Andrea Marron. “By updating this training, we hope to ensure that we are providing our program’s future leaders with the most appropriate, high-quality, and relevant tools and knowledge they need to succeed in their leadership journey.”

What is Crew Officers Orientation training?

Crew Officers Orientation training will help Venturing crews better understand the roles and responsibilities of crew officers. It will also help Venturers learn how to effectively plan and lead meetings and events.

Completion of this training is required for advancement to the Discovery Rank.

What is Crew Officer Seminar training?

This brand-new training resource is the unofficial sequel to the Crew Officers Orientation. Also known as the Planning Session, it allows crew members to understand and create their annual program.

The training covers the three Tiers of Adventure, reviews the Venturing ALPS model, explores recruitment ideas and walks through the steps of planning for an event or activity.

How often should Venturers complete these two trainings?

Scouting America strongly recommends that all crews take both trainings annually.

“We wanted to update the crew officer training to better reflect how modern-day Venturers interact and learn,” says Christopher Gower, the Advisor for Venturing Crew 360 from the Alamo Area Council and the adult lead for the Crew Officer Orientation training update. “In this refreshed training, a Venturer facilitates face-to-face discussions and interactive activities to engage the participants and tie the lessons to their crew, regardless of crew size, focus or experience level.

“The Venturing program is centered around developing youth leadership, and this training squarely puts the focus on a youth-led, adult-advised program.”
