High-Adventure Week: Let’s go back to Philmont

For more than eight decades, Philmont Scout Ranch has hosted backcountry adventures in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico.

These adventures have become life-changing events for many Scouts as they create memories while pushing themselves to conquer the trails and climb peaks, such as the Tooth of Time. Today, Scouts can go backpacking as well as try horseback riding, gold panning, rock climbing, mountain biking and sport shooting — the outdoor adventures are endless.

Philmont trek registration

Registration for 2025 treks opened Oct. 1. You can check Philmont’s registration page to find availability for 2024 and 2025 backcountry adventures as there are spots open for both years.

Treks are offered in the summer, autumn and winter.

What is Philmont?

Since 1939, more than 1 million Scouts, Venturers and adult leaders have visited Philmont Scout Ranch, a 140,000-plus-acre property in northeastern New Mexico.

Ranging in elevation from 6,500 to 12,441 feet, Philmont is known for its backpacking treks in the New Mexico backcountry. These wild, rugged trips can go for seven, nine or 12 days.

You can also choose an eight-day cavalcade: Instead of backpacking, you’re riding horses across the mountains like the famous trappers who first explored the West. For the safety of the rider and the horse, there is a 200-pound weight limit for all riders.

Individual programs focus on certain activities, like STEM and conservation, and range from 12- to 21-day trips. Some of these specialized treks still have spots open for 2024.

BSA Family Adventure Camp

Open to all registered members of the BSA and their families, Family Adventure Camp gives you the chance to visit Philmont and participate in exciting programs. Activities include hiking, rock climbing, fishing, craft centers, horseback riding and so much more. Together, you’re sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.
