NASCAR racetrack hosts massive Scouting event, plus other good news from the week

Darlington Raceway is best known for hosting NASCAR’s Goodyear 400 and Southern 500 events. But on one recent weekend, it played host to hundreds of Scouts and adults as well.

“It turned out to be one of the best chances and experiences that I’ve had this whole year,” says one participant. “It’s been something else, man.”

Although the raceway has hosted Scouts before, a NASCAR official said this event had the largest turnout of any.

“The NASCAR people are first class,” says one troop leader who attended. “They treat these kids, not like they’re just there hanging out like you would see at a major league baseball game, but like they are VIPs.”

Delmar assistant patrol leader Molly Kelley’s older brother is an Eagle Scout.

“I always saw my brother at meetings and I’d be like ‘Oh my gosh, I want to do that, too,’” she said.
