Scouts prep dinners for military families, plus other good news from this week

Operation Easter Baskets is an initiative of an East Meadow, N.Y., supermarket chain designed to deliver Easter meals to more than 200 families with loved ones serving overseas.

It’s a big task made easier by the help of local Scouts BSA troops.

The Scouts gathered on Good Friday to help pack up the holiday meal boxes, each of which included a ham, three sides and a dessert.

Eagle Scout project helps homeless

A Scout from Brighton, Michigan, completed an Eagle Scout project that resulted in 100 personal hygiene packs for unhoused people in Detroit.

To complete the project, Nowling first contacted the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit about his idea and to see whether they would help sponsor the project. Next, he came up with a detailed proposal to present to a Boy Scout review board to approve the project. Once approved, Nowling raised funds for his project. After the money was raised, he purchased all the necessary items needed to assemble his project. On March 18th, he led volunteers from his Troop in assembling the packs. The following week they were delivered to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Scouts partner with local store to raise autism awareness

Watch this video from CBS News Pittsburgh about a local food store that recruited Scouts to spread the message of the importance of bringing opportunities to kids on the autism spectrum.

Scout honors great-grandfather with project

An Eagle Scout candidate from Bloomfield, N.J., recently constructed raised garden beds for disabled seniors in his community.

His inspiration? His great-grandfather, a Polish Army corporal who served in World War II.

“I always wanted to be involved with the veteran community mainly because my great-grandfather was involved in WWII. With me wanting to join the Naval Academy, and my great-grandfather’s service, I wanted to give something back to the veterans.”

Scouts BSA troop cleans up local community center

Troop 1 from Montgomery, Alabama, spent MLK Day of Service earlier this year sprucing up the grounds of one of their community’s most hallowed buildings.

The Jubilee Community Center is situated in an 1880s church building and hosts a wide variety of community events.

On this brisk January morning, the scouts worked together as a team to clear away nearly a ton of leaves and debris from around the building.  Their service to the community was greatly appreciated.<
