Cub Scout donation drive thriving

A 9-year-old Cub Scout’s stuffed animal donation drive was featured in several news reports this month.

Jack from Pack 3111 in Dublin, Ohio, volunteered to help make blankets last year for patients at a children’s hospital in nearby Columbus. Jack wanted to do more, so he started Jack’s Bravery Bears. Now, the 2nd annual teddy bear drive is receiving media coverage throughout Ohio and national online outlets. Jack and his family delivered the first round of bears — more than 400 — just before Christmas. A second delivery is scheduled for next month.

Eagle Scout project honors Pelican Girls

When Addison Jones from Mobile, Alabama, discovered she was a direct descendent of a Pelican Girl, she decided to honor them with a new historical marker as part of her Eagle Scout project. These women traveled to the French colony in the 18th century to help establish the young settlement. Addison’s 9th- great-grandmother was part of the first group to arrive on a ship named Le Pélican.

The marker stands near Colonial Fort Condé and Mobile’s history museum. The local Fox News affiliate covered the historical marker unveiling ceremony and featured Addison, who plans to write a children’s book to tell the story of the Pelican Girls.

Scouts return to fire-ravaged Camp Josepho

Nearly a year ago, the Palisades Fire in Southern California killed 12 people and burned through more than 23,000 acres of land. Included in the destruction was Camp Josepho, one of three camps owned by Scouting America’s Western Los Angeles County Council. About 50 Scouts, parents and regional Scouting leaders returned to the area earlier this month for the first time since the fire. The Los Angeles Times covered the visit and talked with several Scouts about the experience.

While there, Scouts dug out a veteran’s memorial, which had been partially covered by mudslides. They also removed invasive plants and cleaned up debris.
