Dear Dave, Eagle Scout asks: ‘What does it mean to be American?’

Unsatisfied with the dictionary definition — “a citizen of the United States of America” — Eagle Scout Dave Jorgenson recently set out to answer a deceptively simple question: What does it mean to be American?

You might remember “Dear Dave” from his series of hilarious and thought-provoking YouTube videos for the Independent Journal Review.

In his latest chapter, which was debuted in front of hundreds of Scout volunteers and professionals last week at the BSA’s annual meeting, Dave asks that question to Cub Scouts, Eagle Scouts, congressmen, war veterans, the BSA’s Chief Scout Executive and a former secretary of defense.

The answers are surprising, heartfelt and entertaining. Take a look:
