Two Connecticut shooting victims were Tiger Cubs; here’s how to help

It breaks my heart to report that the horrendous school shooting in Connecticut has hit the Scouting family.

The Boy Scouts of America learned that two of the victims, 7-year-old Chase Kowalski and 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, were new Tiger Cub Scouts with Pack 170 in the Connecticut Yankee Council.

Three other families in Pack 170 lost children at the school, and Tiger Cub Den Leader Peter Baressi was a first responder hero who stayed with the families throughout the ordeal.

Victoria Soto, one of the heroic teachers who was killed, was an Explorer as a youth in Stratford EMS Post 4911.

When you live several states away from those in pain, it’s easy to feel helpless. In addition to keeping the families in your thoughts and prayers, I’ve learned of an opportunity to send cards, letters and donations to those in mourning.

The Pack 170 leadership has asked Connecticut Yankee Council to set up a Memorial Fund to support the five families. Donations can be made out to “Pack 170 Memorial Fund” c/o Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06461.

Your family or your Scout unit may wish to send condolence cards and letters. Those can also be addressed to “Pack 170″ c/o the Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06461.

After the jump, a letter from Wayne Brock.

Letter from Wayne Brock, Chief Scout Executive

To: National Board, Advisory Council, and our BSA family:

We are all struggling to come to grips with the tragic school shooting in Connecticut. I have the sad responsibility to report that this tragedy has also struck within the Scouting family.

We’ve been informed two of the young victims, 7-year-old Chase Kowalski and 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, were new Tiger Cub Scouts with Pack 170 in the Connecticut Yankee Council. In addition, three of the victims were siblings of other boys in Pack 170. Victoria Soto, one of the hero teachers, was an Explorer as a youth.

Please join me in remembering these victims and families in your prayers.

We have been in touch with council leadership. The National Council is offering any support possible during this difficult time.

Working with the leadership of Pack 170, the Connecticut Yankee Council has established a memorial fund in support of the five families. If interested, donations, cards, and letters can be sent to the Pack 170 Memorial Fund, c/o Connecticut Yankee Council, P.O. Box 32, Milford, CT 06460

God bless everyone as we take a step back and think about the safety and well-being of our own families and loved ones in the midst of this national time of mourning.

Wayne Brock

  13. I’m a venturer scout from Canada and I have started a small fundraiser to help out the troop and families. So far i’m up to 80$. Even though its not related to me I feel that through the brotherhood of scouting I should help out no matter what. I do hope the families will be ok. The Tiger scouts are in my prayers.

  15. Hello from your Scouting friends in the North,

We represent the 8th Richmond Hill Beaver Scouts. Beavers are the youngest members of Scouts Canada and they are boys and girls aged 5 to 8 years. We live in a town, Richmond Hill which is about half an hour north of Toronto, Ontario.

We, the Leaders (Rainbow, Chatter and Rusty/Akela) have been instructing our Beavers about the meaning of compassion and caring about our fellow people and especially our fellow Scouts.

We talked to them about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School and we encouraged them to share some words of support and care to the students, the parents and the town itself. We try and ensure that Beavers think of others as well as themselves and to show sympathy and support to others who are in need.

We have mailed you a sympathy package written by the Beavers and by us and we hope that you can forward out thoughts and prayers to everyone who has been touched by this event and hope that with support and time, all of us will be able to heal.

This Saturday, at the Kub Kar Rally, we will open the rally with a special beaver buggy that we have built and dedicated to Tiger Cubs Chase and Jessie and the other children who were affected by this tragedy at Sandy Hook .We plan to send the buggy to your pack soon.

    Yours in Scouting,

  18. My name is Rashad Ajward and I am a Venture with the 13th Richmond Hill Venture Company in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada
I started my journey in scouting as a Beaver Scout just like Tiger Cubs Chase K and Benjamin W. of your Tiger Cub Pack.
As a Beaver Scout, I learned through the Beaver Scout Motto that by “Sharing, Sharing, and Sharing” we WILL find the strength to overcome.
My heartfelt sympathies for your loss under these very sad circumstances.
My scout group- our Beaver Scout Colony where my mother is a leader, has made a Peace Tree using a Crab Apple branch and on it we have eight daisies, one for each Daisy Girl Scouts who lost her life that day and a print out of two Tiger Cub hats, one for Chase K. and the other for Benjamin W. We also have two bunches of balloons, some pine cones and a picture of the Eternal Candle lit by the Girl Scouts of Los Angeles on the tree. We have placed twenty eight hearts on Birch Bark and wrapped it around the pot holding the tree, and we wrote down the twenty six names of the teachers and students from Sandy Hook-one name for each heart.
We will take the Peace Tree with us to every scout event we attend this year and perhaps in the future, so that Chase k. and Benjamin W. will be in attendance with us through our thoughts and prayers.
You will always be in my thoughts and prayers as I continue my scout journey.
The following messages of condolence were collected at The 17th Richmond Hill Kub Kar Rally and I have posted them on your scouting blog.
May God Bless all of you.

  20. I am a junior scout from New Jersey visiting my cousin in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. My cousin has been collecting condolence messages and invited me to join her effort. So here I go; It shocked me how someone could commit such a violent act. I will remember the eight daisy scouts from Sandy Hook as I travel my girl scout journey.

  21. We will be planting 26 red poppies on April 14, 2013 at our school playground. We have 26 watering cans with their 26 names painted on each watering can. We will remember the 26 taken from us by watering 26 seeds of love. We will have Girl Scouts, Tiger Cub Scouts and families watering these seeds of love. Each of them will take their turn honoring them by watering their seed of love. In the center of the red poppies will be a butterfly topiary.

With all of the love and hugs that one can give from the state of Virginia, our hearts go out to the Newtown Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts with Pack 170 in Newtown.
