We have had some issues with our troop and don’t like the direction it is heading with it’s current Scoutmaster. Some other scouts have left due to various issues with him as well. We have known this SM since he was a den leader in Cub Scouts and he just rubs us the wrong way. We are in the process of looking for a new troop for our son and would like some advice on how to pick the right troop for us. What questions should we ask the prospective troop(s)?

“Do you mind if we observe one of your regular troop meetings?” I think you can learn much of what you need to know by you and your son showing up at a regular meeting, because the decision of which troop to join (like the decision to leave your current troop) is primarily emotional, not rational. Introduce yourself and your son to the Scoutmaster and a couple of the other adults, and then see what happens. That will give you a sense of the personality of the troop, an impression of the people, and a feel for how the troop does things.
