I was wondering about the first requirement of the National Den Award:
“Have at least 50 percent of the den’s Tigers, Cub Scouts, or Webelos Scouts attend two den meetings and one pack meeting or activity each month of the year.”
Our pack is fairly active during the summer, and there are plenty of opportunities for the scouts to attend one “pack meeting or activity” in June, July and August, but the individual dens operate primarily just during the school year, so dens would unlikely be unable to meet the requirement to attend two den meeting each month in July and August.
Can “each month of the year” be interpreted as “each month of the school year”, or is it indeed meant to be 12 months of the year? I’d be interested to hear from other Den Leaders and Cubmasters to see how this requirement has been handled in your units.
We interpret the requirement as “two den meetings each month of the year” – meaning calendar year not school year. Our pack is active over the summer too, but only the dens that choose to meet over the summer qualify for the award each year. We have 12 dens, but usually only a few are able to earn the award each year.
