Scouts rescue lost Eagle Scout, plus other news in Scouting this week

#AdventureOn!

While backpacking in California’s Emigrant Wilderness, Santa Barbara’s Troop 26 found 78-year-old Eagle Scout Douglas Montgomery suffering from hypothermia after being lost for days without food, water or gear.

Montgomery had set out solo but lost his backpack and wandered 15 miles off course. The Scouts, all around age 12, along with Scoutmaster Michael James Hey and four other adult leaders, helped stabilize him with food, water and warmth before calling for rescue.

As they waited for a rescue helicopter, the troop used their training to gather Montgomery’s medical info — turning the emergency into a powerful real-world lesson in preparedness.

Montgomery was airlifted to safety and later drove himself home, grateful and unharmed.

Scouting at full speed

More than 50 Scouts and leaders from Troop 125 in Wellington, Florida, recently camped in the infield of the iconic Daytona International Speedway — turning a legendary racetrack into a one-of-a-kind outdoor classroom.

Scouts worked on rank advancements, honed their outdoor skills and fished in the infield lake. A troop leader even handcrafted custom woggles, giving each Scout a special keepsake from the trip.

The experience included walking on the track, a STEM Q&A about racing technology and cheering on NASCAR driver — and fellow Eagle Scout — William Byron. It was a weekend that blended Scouting spirit with racing excitement.

Scouts’ open house draws big crowd

Right after the annual Labor Day parade in Newtown, Connecticut, local troops welcomed dozens of community members to an open house on the lawn of a local school.

The event featured a variety of Scout-led activity stations, including inflatable archery, backyard bass fishing and a Lego race car derby. Visitors of all ages had the chance to experience the fun and skills Scouting offers.

Troop 770 assistant Scoutmaster Ryan Slater called it a “great turnout” and thanked the community for its strong support.
