Shell-shocked! Cub Scouts defy gravity in egg drop event
Cub Scout Pack 270 from Newtown, Connecticut, held its annual egg drop event, where Scouts designed protective contraptions to keep raw eggs from breaking when dropped from a fire truck ladder.
Firefighter Rachael Gindraux of the Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer fire department assisted by dropping the devices, which included creative designs like pyramids, boxes and cylinders that used household items such as sponges, popcorn and balloons to help prevent the eggs from breaking.
Scouts from Troop 270 in Newtown loaded the contraptions into a duffle bag for lifting. The eggs were dropped from 30, 50 and 70 feet — with surviving eggs moving on to the next round.

Sea Base expedition leaves lasting mark on Venturers
Sixteen Scouts with Venturing Crew 9130, known as the “Yooper Castaway Crew,” from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula spent a week on a remote barrier island near Key West, Florida, as part of the Sea Base Out Island Adventure program.
The Venturers paddled seven miles in Polynesian war canoes to reach the island, where they lived without phones, electricity or running water. The group planned their own meals, used limited water and engaged in snorkeling, fishing and trail maintenance activities.
They also removed about 150 pounds of trash to help protect the island’s ecosystem. The trip emphasized leadership, environmental stewardship and self-reliance.
