Eagle Scout Derek Desrosiers from North Attleborough, Massachusetts, recently received recognition for successfully executing a service project that tackled pollution by using aquatic plants to improve water quality.
His project, which involved planting flora along the Ten Mile River that will absorb excess nutrients from water caused by fertilizer runoff, earned him the Dr. Albert Einstein Supernova Award from the Narragansett Council.
The award recognizes Scouts for exceptional STEM contributions.
Derek’s research included a testing phase in which he measured plant responses to various nutrient conditions. He hopes his findings inspire further exploration of cost-effective, noninvasive environmental solutions.

Cub Scouts build homes for tortoises
Pack 92 from Nantucket, Massachusetts, recently built custom homes for two tortoises, Mzee and Melvin, at the Maria Mitchell Association’s Hinchman House Natural Science Museum.
The tortoises had outgrown their previous habitat, prompting the Cub Scouts to design and construct spacious enclosures from wooden crates. Together, they moved the tortoises into their new homes, preparing the enclosures with rocks, substrate and protective covers.
Mzee and Melvin are now enjoying their larger, improved living spaces.
