Scouting America’s Sam Houston Area Council has partnered with NASA to launch a STEM initiative that aims to better equip high school students with skills related to science, technology, engineering and math.

“We are honored to establish this opportunity with NASA, which will provide out-of-this-world experiences for our Scouts and volunteers to access preeminent STEM programs,” says Scout Executive Marvin Smith. “This agreement will inspire young minds through hands-on activities and captivating simulations that bring the universe to life.”

The collaboration aims to help the Houston-based council prepare its youth members for careers in STEM while also furthering NASA’s goal to inspire a new generation of space explorers and innovators. The agreement also will help leverage NASA’s educational outreach programs to enrich the Scouting experience at SHAC’s new premier camping facility, Camp Strake, in southeast Texas.

Oregon youth tout benefits of Scouting program

Scouts BSA members from Bend, Oregon, got some nice publicity from a local TV station that gave them the opportunity to share some thoughts on their Scouting experience.

Scouts BSA teaches character development, citizenship training, leadership, and mental and physical fitness. At Troop 23, Scouts learn more than outdoor skills.

“Interviewing is kind of an essential part of many facets of life,” said Lucas Gregory, Troop 23’s senior patrol leader. “I’ve gone through a couple interviews other than Scouts for jobs and scholarships and colleges right now.”

Increase in demand for Scouting prompts formation of new Cub Scout pack

A nice story in the Winter Garden, Florida, West Orange Times & Observer details the formation of a new Cub Scout pack created to account for rising membership demands.

Horizon West is one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, according to the article. Prior to starting the new pack, only one Cub Scout pack was serving the entire area, which included students from five elementary schools.

“Cub Scouting is focused on living the ideals and values embedded in the Scout Oath, Scout Law and motto,” says the new pack’s Cubmaster. “So, for us, as a brand-new pack of 32 energetic kids and families who have joined us, everything that we do is about instilling those values of the oath and the law back into not only the school but also the community.”
