Eagle Scout project garners praise from NFL star, plus other news in Scouting this week

Jackson Lampe, a junior at Wahlert Catholic High School in Dubuque, Iowa, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and was named the school’s student of the month for his efforts.

For his service project, Jackson provided care kits to the burn unit at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital to support parents of pediatric burn victims. His own experience as a burn survivor at age 2 inspired him to take on this project.

His efforts earned praise from hospital staff and NFL star Kirk Cousins, a burn survivor himself.

“We’ve both gone through that whole process of painful healing, and the fact that you would use your platform to help other people that are suffering from burns, especially kids with the comfort kits, is a tremendous idea,” Cousins said in a video to Jackson.

Scout builds gaga pit for elementary school

Lucas Sides, a member of Troop 1407 from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, built a wooden gaga pit for Kaiser Elementary, in Roseville, Michigan, for his Eagle Scout project.

Gaga is a fast-paced game similar to dodgeball but played in an octagonal wooden pit. Lucas constructed the pit after fundraising for materials with the help of his younger brother and other troop members. He chose the project to provide elementary school students with a new game to play.

The students and staff at Kaiser, the school Lucas himself attended, have praised him for his contribution.
