“Scouting sticks with you throughout your life,” says one member of Troop 5 in Wakulla County, Florida.

Indeed, the lessons these Scouts learned as they navigated their way through a service project that involved installing new flag poles in a public park will prove invaluable to the young men involved for many years.

Eagle Scout candidate creates patriotic flag retirement box

There are right ways and wrong ways to retire worn-out flags. One Texas Scout wants to make it as easy as possible for members of her community to do it the right way.

Scouts BSA member Samantha Toyama collected the materials and then led a group of volunteers in the construction of a red, white and blue flag retirement box for citizens of Harker Heights, Texas.

She presented the box to city hall, where anyone can use it to donate used flags, knowing that they’ll be disposed of properly.
