A challenge for Scouts: Let’s work together to make the world a better place

Submit ideas, art and poems

It takes cooperation from all groups and individuals to work together so that we can all get along. Learning to accept people for who they are, no matter what their background, makes good sense for us all. By understanding how conflict and cooperation affect people and their behavior, we might be able to make our world a better place.

On Monday, Boys’ Life issued a challenge for Scouts and young people. Inspired by the words of the American Cultures merit badge pamphlet, the team called for art, poems and writing from youth on how we can see real change for the better in our communities.

Scout Shop is also supplying American Cultures merit badge pamphlets for the first 20 viewers to submit their ideas. The badge grew in popularity by 23% last year. Boys’ Life is challenging Scouts to continue this growth and make it one of the most popular badges earned in 2020!

On Wednesday, Boys’ Life was live again and shared viewer submissions and talked with American Cultures merit badge contributor and sociologist Dr. David Briscoe. He’s an Eagle Scout and a Silver Buffalo recipient. He has also served as a member of the BSA’s National Executive Board and is a former president of the Quapaw Area Council. He currently serves as the chair of the Quapaw Council’s Diversity Council. Dr. Briscoe is a professor of sociology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

The Boys’ Life team wrapped up Wednesday’s Facebook Live by taking a look at the Citizenship in the Community merit badge. After reading a few excerpts, the team again challenged viewers to submit their thoughts and artwork.

Finishing the week

On Friday, Boys’ Life finished up the week by sharing more viewer submissions and highlighting the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge and the Cub Scout adventure: Build My Own Hero. The team called for ideas on how Scouts and young leaders can be heroes in their communities and in the nation.

Encourage Scouts to share ideas

Use the form above to add your art and writing submissions. Your submissions could also land you a free copy of this exceptional merit badge pamphlet so you can continue to work to improve your community.

Parents are encouraged to help keep youth voices at the center of these conversations. All comments must abide by the Scout Law to foster a safe place for young people to share ideas and think critically.
