2020-2021 preview: Philmont Scout Ranch

After the 2018 Ute Park fire, Philmont Scout Ranch is back in a big way. More than 24,000 campers visited there last summer — Philmont’s largest summer ever.

The base is best known for seven- and 12-day treks that challenge participants mentally and physically. Treks include stops at several of Philmont’s staffed backcountry camps, where staffers offer experiences participants will remember all their lives. Last summer, Philmont had staff represented from all 50 states and four countries.

Individual opportunities are available at Philmont, too. Choose from a STEM trek, the Roving Outdoor Conservation School, a Trail Crew Trek and more.

You can also bring the whole family to the Philmont Training Center for a weeklong conference or the BSA Family Adventure Camp program, which was so popular that it will be offered every week next summer.

Here’s what else you need to know about planning a trip to this legendary Scouting destination.

Philmont trek registration and lottery info

Philmont is about more than just treks, but treks remain the ranch’s most popular offering. For many departure dates, demand exceeds supply. That’s why Philmont offers an online lottery, held about 18 months in advance, to give everyone an equal shot.

2020: The online lottery for 2020 has passed, but there are still slots available. Click here to see availability. Crews selecting a 2020 trek will need to condense the trek preparation timeline and start shakedown hikes and preparation right away.

2021: The 2021 lottery window is now open through December 3. The lottery is for 12-day, 9-day, 7-day and Cavalcade treks. The lottery-based registration process gives everyone an equal chance at some of Philmont’s most popular departure dates. Register during the lottery window to give your crew the best chance at the date you want. Go here to enter the lottery or learn more about the process.

No crew? No problem!

Philmont has several individual opportunities to attend. Each individual trek has a focus on a different topic and Scouts from across the country come together to form a crew that is led by Philmont staff. You can work with Philmont’s livestock, build trail, learn about STEM and so much more on these unique treks. Click here for more.

Plan to attend the Philmont Training Center in 2020

The 2020 Training Center Schedule is not available online yet. Registration will open soon. The training center will offer more than 50 different conferences this summer.

BSA Family Adventure Camp now available all summer long

The popular Family Adventure Camp will be offered every week of the 2020 summer, giving you more chances to experience the magic of Philmont with your family. Open to all registered members of the BSA and their families, you will have the chance to visit Philmont and participate in exciting programs as a family. Activities include hiking, rock climbing, fishing, craft center, horseback riding and so much more. Together, you’re sure to make memories that will last a lifetime!
