Extreme Makeovers, Round 18: Eagle Scout project before-and-after photos

Note: This is the 18th in an occasional series where I share Eagle Scout project before-and-after photos. See the complete collection here.

To fully understand the impact Eagle Scout projects have on communities, you need to see to believe. That’s why I asked to see Eagle Scout project before-and-after photos — the same photos prospective Eagles are asked to include with their post-project report.

This week’s batch of 10 projects includes an elementary school playground, an outdoor stage and a hawk aviary for rehabilitating birds.

What’s great is that you can multiply each individual act of stupendous service by more than 50,000. That’s how many Eagle Scout projects get completed every single year.

Sean from California

Who: Sean, Troop 318, Murrieta, Calif.

What: Sean and his helpers took a church prop and converted it into an enclosed locked sound box on wheels for his Gardner Middle School music teacher.

What: Brentyn and his helpers created a memorial garden for the Stratford Ambulance Association to dedicate to all of its past members.

Joey from Arizona

Jeremy from Florida

Who: Jeremy, Troop 389, Green Cove Springs, Fla.

What: Jeremy and his helpers replaced a dilapidated wooden deck at his local community theatre with new composite decking that now functions as an outdoor stage.

CJ from Colorado

Who: CJ, Troop 16, Parker, Colo.

What: CJ and his helpers built an outdoor classroom for CJ’s high school, Legend High School. The project took more than 200 man hours to complete, and required more than $2,500 in fundraising. The classroom was installed in October of 2015. The 17 benches were converted from wood pallets by his Venturing crew. The rock was moved and installed by his troop.
The classroom was a hit in the Spring of 2016 once the weather became nice.

Nick from Pennsylvania

Who: Nick, Troop 51, Clarion, Pa.

What: Nick’s one-year project included research and design as he and his helpers worked with local historians to install two historical interpretive panels at the Clarion Courthouse and between the Ross Memorial Clarion Free Library and the Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry office. As much as this project was a historical initiative project, it equally was an opportunity to strengthen Nick’s small-town merchants by attracting visitors to get out and walk Main Street, read the panels, and hopefully stop and shop locally in the community.

Patrick from New York

Who: Patrick, Troop 42, West Nyack, N.Y.

What: Patrick and his helpers built a picnic area for the West Nyack Little League.

Joseph from California

Who: Joseph, Troop 273, Union City, Calif.

What: The hawk aviary at the Ohlone Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was little more than 2-by-4 framing with wire mesh attached. As a result, predators could look in on the sick, injured or orphaned birds that were recovering in the aviary. This caused the birds additional stress and impeded their recovery. In addition, there was concern that the aviary wasn’t structurally sound and might not hold up to a moderate earthquake. So Joseph and his helpers put a layer of plywood up to 8 feet all the way around the aviary. From 8 to 16 feet, they put in 1-by-3 slats spaced 1 inch apart. This combination improved the structural soundness of the aviary while giving the birds shelter
