1979 Boy Scouts of America PSA features the Peanuts gang

Want to learn some skills? Climb some hills? Do good deeds for those in need?

Then follow Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Woodstock and the Peanuts gang by becoming a Boy Scout.

Yes, the same fun things — hiking, biking, making friends — that Scouts do today is what interested young men in 1979 when the BSA released a public service announcement featuring the classic Charles Schulz characters.

Michael Tullier, of Troop 50 in Auburn, Ala., sent me a link to the video above.

It’s a clever, fun way to sell Scouting’s value to families. Even Jorge Garcia — Hurley from Lost — remembers it fondly.

Of course the song in my head now is the Boy Scouts jingle Charlie Brown sang in that commercial. It's like a flashback weekend in my brain.

This wasn’t the only time Scouting and the Peanuts gang crossed paths.

Schulz first introduced Snoopy’s Scouting connections on May 13, 1974. The beloved Beagle Scout appeared in multiple comic strips from the 1970s through 2000, according to the Charles M. Schulz Museum.
