Cub Scouts to the rescue in Houston flooding crisis

Pack 1292 Houston flooding relief suppliesWhen a major city faces some of the worst flooding in its history, Scouts leap into action.

Scouts like the young men of Pack 1292 of the Sam Houston Area Council in Houston.

Cubmaster Patrick Snyder heard on the radio that the Red Cross was opening a flood-relief distribution point at a nearby elementary school.

He recognized the school’s name — Foster Elementary — because that’s where Pack 1292 has been meeting for 36 years.

So Snyder spread the word via Facebook and email to fellow volunteers in the Flaming Arrow District.

“The wolf howled, and the pack answered,” Snyder says. “With no previous notice, the next morning I had two of my Webelos and one of my Bears on site.”

The numbers grew, and soon the Cub Scouts were packing boxes with relief supplies and loading the boxes into cars and trucks.

“The Red Cross reps said it was one of the most efficient and well-run distributions they had ever done,” Snyder says.

Pack 1292 helped about 80 to 100 families, Snyder says, and recorded 43 service hours toward their Journey to Excellence goals.

“Pack 1292 did their best, and it was pretty darn good,” Snyder says. “It was an honor to serve with them.”
