Read what ‘Game of Thrones’ author George R. R. Martin wrote to a new Eagle Scout

Sam Charles Eagle ScoutSam Charles received several congratulatory letters when he became an Eagle Scout last year — from astronauts, politicians and coaches.

But only one came from the man who dreamed up Jon Snow, Arya Stark and Tyrion Lannister. Yes, the letter Sam received from author George R. R. Martin is by far his favorite.

“Sam is a huge fan of the Game of Thrones series of books and TV show,” his mom, Martha, wrote in an email to me. “So getting a letter from George R. R. Martin was a very big deal for him.”

In the letter, which you see in full below, Martin compares writing a book to earning Scouting’s highest honor.

“Any difficult undertaking, be it writing a book or achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, is made up of many small efforts,” he writes. “It is all too easy to become overwhelmed or give in to discouragement along the way. The fact that you continued on your course all the way to the finish line shows a dedication and commitment that will serve you well throughout your life.”

Sam, a member of Troop 109 of the Palmetto Council in South Carolina, certainly has shown dedication to Scouting.

And though he’ll graduate from high school next month, his Scouting adventure isn’t over. He’ll work at Boy Scout Camp Bob Hardin this summer before reporting to The Citadel to begin college in the fall.

To Sam I say: May life’s journey be enjoyable, fulfilling and free of White Walkers.
