Adventure Base 100, Vol. 18: Grand Rapids, Michigan

http://www.youtube.com/v/o1MxE6NJf9M&fs=1

Gerald Ford, the only Eagle Scout to serve as U.S. president, grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich. And when Adventure Base 100 stopped there this month, the former president was on a lot of people's minds.

Ford earned the Eagle Scout rank in 1927 as a part of Troop 15. His Eagle badge and merit badge sash are on display at the Gerald R. Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, which is where AB 100 set up for the weekend.

How did Scouting affect President Ford? He said it best: "I can say without hesitation, because of Scouting principles, I
know I was a better athlete, I was a better naval officer, I was a
better Congressman, and I was a better prepared President."

The BSA has been bringing families together for 100 years, and Adventure Base 100 is touring the country all year to honor that legacy and to give families another opportunity to get together and enjoy all that Scouting offers.

"Scouting's a great way for fathers and sons to spend time together," Jesse Ceja told the Adventure Base 100 video team.

Ceja and his son Aaron recently visited the traveling exhibit in Chicago, which is where the latest AB 100 video takes you. Check it out!

The latest episode in the Adventure Base 100 series is special for two reasons. First, viewers will meet Jason Bragdon, Scoutmaster of Louisville-based Troop 56. His troop was canoeing in the Boundary Waters when a sudden lightning storm demanded quick thinking and Wilderness Survival skills from the guys.

In the same video, you'll meet Troop 317's Mark Ray. Mark is an Eagle Scout and an active Scouter in his community, but you might recognize his name for another reason: Mark is a special contributor for Scouting magazine. He recently wrote the special 100th Anniversary section featured in our January-February issue.

Talk about well-rounded! Atlanta's Isiah Jenkins already is a standout athlete in track, baseball, football, and basketball. And even with all of that on his plate, he still makes time for rock climbing, hiking, and camping with the Boy Scouts of America. He's also learned how Scouting can positively affect the world around him.

"Before I was a Scout, I didn't realize that giving back to the
community was such an important part of life," he said. "But now I do,
and I try my best to give back as much as possible."

You'll meet Isiah and other great Scouts and Scouters as Adventure Base 100 stops in Atlanta, Ga.

The Adventure Base 100 journey continues to Charlotte, N.C., where you'll meet the Whitlock family. Three generations of Whitlocks have been in Scouting, meaning their involvement spans 70 of the BSA's 100 years of existence. Impressive!

Their long history in the BSA proves that "Scouting is much greater than any individual."

Your ambassador for Adventure Base 100's visit to Greenville, S.C., is another special example of the power of Scouting.

Meet Ameer Armaly, a college junior who didn't let his blindness get in the way of his drive to become an Eagle Scout.

"The biggest lesson I learned from Scouting was how to improvise on the spot," he said.

Watch Ameer's story in the video above, and check out Adventure Base 100 when it visits your hometown.

Scouting is for everyone, and nobody knows that message better than Tony Stout, a South Florida Scoutmaster who works with children of migrant families. He helps ensure that these boys find a home in Scouting to keep them on a path toward success. His work keeps Miami's youth out of gangs and on their way to college.

This uplifting story comes from Miami, Fla., the site of the Adventure Base 100 team's latest stop. Check out the video above.

The U.S. mint released the BSA Centennial Coin this week, which makes the timing perfect for Adventure Base 100 to stop in Jacksonville, Fla., to chat with Jeff Swindling, a Scouter who helped make the coin possible.

Adventure Base 100 will tour the country all year spreading Scouting's message to former, current, and future Scouts. You won't want to miss it when it comes near you.

"In Boy Scouts, I learned not to give up," he said. "Now I'm an Eagle Scout."

Meet Jacob Pekarek, an Eagle Scout with Troop 727. He's your host for last week's Adventure Base 100 stop in Houston, Tex.

For his Eagle Scout project, Jacob took on an ambitious task: labeling 500 storm drains throughout the city with special discs to inform residents that storm water drains into Galveston Bay. The intent is to discourage dumping of trash and other harmful products into this estuary that is important for sustaining marine life.

Houston officials said that Jacob and the 12 other Scouts who worked with him on the project did in one day what would've taken city volunteers a month to complete.

It's a project that will have a long-lasting impact on the nation's fourth-largest city. Well done!
