Sept-Oct Where Am I image

September-October ‘Where Am I?’ winner and location revealed

What a view! And it’s one that doesn’t come without a little effort, either.

If you want to perch atop this rock wall, you’ve got to rope up and climb nearly 75 feet of vertical rock.

The location? Sam’s Throne, a secluded rock-climbing spot near Mt. Judea in Arkansas’ Ozark mountains.

Readers submitted 114 guesses to the September-October “Where Am I?” contest, and only 60 were correct. That means each submission had little more than a 50-percent chance of being correct. We used a random number generator to select the winning entry, number 17.

Despite the tough stakes, No. 17, Leslie Ratterman of Kansas, guessed right. In addition to her correct entry, she wrote, “This is one of our favorite places on the planet!” And with a view like the one above, it’s not hard to see why.

Congrats, Leslie! You’ve won a $100 Supply Group gift certificate to use at ScoutStuff.org or at your local Scout Shop.

We’ll continue our geography trivia in our next “Where Am I?” contest, featuring a far-off island. Can you guess the location? Examine the clues and the photo at this link, and submit your guess for a chance to win.

Good luck!

Get gritty: Celebrate ‘Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day’

Do your typical weekend plans involve dirt and Scouting? Step things up a notch! Add some rubber to the mix with a mountain-biking outing.

Tomorrow’s the perfect time to head out to your local mountain-biking trail to celebrate Saturday Oct. 6 as “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” hosted by the International Mountain Biking Association.

Check out this interactive map of the U.S. to locate a “Take a Kid Mountain Biking” event near you.

Young mountain bikers—from Tiger Cubs to older Scouts and Venturers—will stun you with how easily they pedal on gritty surfaces. Their catlike reflexes allow them to zip around sharp turns like Indy-500 drivers!

Besides being a great way to get some exercise and add a new activity to your troop or crew, a mountain-biking trip is a good excuse to get Scouts ready for what they’ll experience at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree. The home of the jamboree, the brand-new Summit Bechtel Reserve, touts a three-tier trail system allowing Scouts to choose the difficulty of their mountain-biking experience (shown in the photo above).

Before you head out, be sure to review page 34 of the Guide to Safe Scouting for information on cycling safety.

And don’t forget to “Like” the International Mountain Biking Association on Facebook and enter to win one of two Specialized mountain bikes.

Wherever (and whenever) you choose to mountain bike, we hope you and your Scouts enjoy the ride.

Eagles: Apply now for 2013 NESA scholarships

Do you know an Eagle (or soon-to-be Eagle) who is graduating high school and entering college in 2013? The time has arrived for Eagle Scouts to apply for 2013 National Eagle Scout Association scholarships.

First, see who’s eligible for up to $446,000 in scholarships:

  • An Eagle Scout having passed the board of review on or before Dec. 31, 2012.
  • A graduating high-school senior (for academic and merit scholarships) or an undergraduate college student no later than completion of his junior year of college (for merit scholarships only).
  • A NESA member.

The third requirement of NESA membership is new this year. If a new Eagle isn’t currently a NESA member, he must first join the organization to be considered for NESA scholarship. (Within the first six months of an Eagle Scout’s board of review, a “special” one-year NESA membership is $20.) Read more information on the varying membership levels, and register as a NESA member.

Investing in a NESA membership opens the door for an Eagle Scout to earn up to $446,000 in college scholarships.

The applications are now “live” at NESA.orgApplications are due Dec. 31, 2012.

See below for a full list of the available 2013 NESA scholarships. (And see who won the 2012 scholarships.)

Enter daily for a chance to win one of four tents

Your tent serves as a home away from home. It withstands bad weather, late-night setups, curious insects … the list goes on.

But plenty of Scouters still use the same tent from their days as a young Scout. It’s time to upgrade—with help from Scouting magazine. And, as of Oct. 15, we’re adding another tent to the list of prizes, which means we’ll be selecting four (instead of three) winners.

In October, four winners will take home a brand new camping shelter in the STAKE YOUR CLAIM GIVEAWAY, featuring four of our favorite tents: the L.L.Bean Microlight FS; the Kelty Salida 2;  the Easton Hat-Trick 2P; and the Big Agnes Burn Ridge Outfitter 2.

One winner will get to stake his claim by choosing the winning prize. The second runner up will choose from the remaining three tents, and the third runner up will choose from the remaining two tents; and the fourth runner up will take home the final option. Read more about the tents in the STAKE YOUR CLAIM GIVEAWAY.

You can enter to win daily, starting today! And use the “Tell-A-Friend” entries to share the giveaway with friends and earn extra entries. Contest ends Nov. 1.

Good luck!

In September’s GOING UP! GIVEAWAY, 4,078 entries were received and we randomly selected one entry as our winner.

This entry belongs to Mark DeBonville, a committee member of Troop 188 in the Western Colorado Council. He’s won a pair of EVOLV climbing shoes, a Black Diamond Vector helmet, a Petzl starter kit, and Julbo sport glasses. Congrats, Mark!

Going Up! Giveaway Blog

Enter daily for a chance to win rock-climbing gear

Ever watched a group of Scouts tackle a rock-climbing wall?

They make it look so easy!

Now, as an adult, we can try to shimmy up a rock-wall in a nimble nanosecond — but let’s just say it’s a lot tougher than Scouts often make it look. (We’ll chalk it up to their youth.)

But that doesn’t mean adult leaders can’t join in the rock-climbing fun. We’re here to give one Scouter an extra boost on his or her way to the top: the GOING UP! GIVEAWAY.

One Scouter will win a bundle of excellent rock-climbing gear suitable for a beginner and/or intermediate climber. The gear includes: a pair of EVOV climbing shoes, a Black Diamond Vector helmet, a Petzl starter kit, and Julbo sport glasses. Total prize package is $365.

Read more about the GOING UP! GIVEAWAY gear selected by our gear expert, Stephen Regenold (of TheGearJunkie.com) featured in September-October 2012 issue of Scouting magazine.

Enter now for a chance to win this rock-climbing gear package. And don’t forget: Your odds of winning increase the more you enter, so be sure to enter daily. Plus, use the “Tell-A-Friend” link that’s displayed after your entry—by sharing via e-mail, Facebook, or Twitter—and you can earn up to one entry per friend who enters. The contest ends Sept. 30.

Good luck!

Where Am I? July-August 2012

July-August ‘Where Am I?’ location—and winner!—revealed

Researching far-off destinations for the “Where Am I?” contests is one of my favorite things to do while on the job. Why? Because I always find myself in awe of how many cool places exist in our great nation.

Take, for instance, the secret location of the July-August challenge: Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa. As a midwesterner, I was surprised that I’d never heard of it before! And it appears that I wasn’t the only one: this contest had far fewer entries than normal, only 152 guesses.

New Jersey Scouter Jo Ann Marucci was randomly selected as the winning entry with the correct answer. Congrats, Jo Ann!

Can you guess where I ended up in the September-October “Where Am I?” challenge. Take your best shot.

As always, the same rules apply: Read the clues, examine the photo, and submit your guess. On Oct. 22, we’ll randomly select a correct guess to award one winner a $100 Supply Group gift card.

Good luck!
