Pack wins supermarket’s $5,000 Monopoly prize, donates it all

I just assumed nobody ever wins those collect-the-pieces games at supermarkets.

That is, until I read about Laurie M. and Pack 263.

Laurie was shopping at the local Shaw’s Supermarket on behalf of the Windham, N.H.-based pack. The pack was purchasing about $400 in groceries to donate to Shepherd’s Pantry Inc., a Windham charity.

Shaw’s, like many supermarkets these days, is running a promotion where customers receive Monopoly game pieces for every purchase. Finding the right combination of pieces yields prizes like gift cards and cash.

Buying $400 in groceries meant a lot of Monopoly tickets, and when Laurie got home and sorted through them, she made a startling discovery: She had won $5,000 in groceries.

For Laurie, fellow Cub Scout leader James G. and the Cub Scouts themselves, the next step was obvious. They would donate the $5,000 Shaw’s gift card to Shepherd’s Pantry. Kindness to others is what Scouts do.

With this five-grand gesture, Pack 263 multiplied its gift to the pantry by more than 12 times.

In a statement on its website, Shepherd’s Pantry thanked the Scouts of Pack 263 for their generosity.

“Our shelves will be full for a long time with the groceries we can buy with $5,000,” the statement says. “Thank you, Cub Scouts, for your kindness, generosity and selflessness. You set a wonderful example for all of us.”

Thanks to Christopher Hopkins, of the Daniel Webster Council for the story tip.
