ScoutCast: A BSA podcast, all grown up

scoutcast-logo1Scouters love to shoot the breeze about the next campout, newest merit badge, or tastiest recipe.

But when someone brings up a more-sensitive topic at a roundtable or leader meeting, it’s often greeted by silence.

That’s where the new ScoutCast comes in. The new podcast, a close relative of the popular CubCast, will focus on topics that you might not feel comfortable talking about at roundtable meetings, such as bullying. That’s January’s subject.

The goal: Get you and your fellow Scouters thinking and, ideally, talking about these critical issues facing Boy Scouts.

The hosts are familiar faces voices to those of us who work for the BSA’s magazines. Meet J.D. Owen, editor-in-chief of Boys’ LifeScouting, and Eagle Scout magazines, and Paula Murphey, senior editor of Boys’ Life.

For the debut episode, J.D. and Paula chat with New York Times best-selling author Michael Gurian about the best ways to handle bullying in your troop. (P.S.: Read Scouting magazine’s 2010 article on the subject for more insight.)

    • Cubcast was set up on iTunes, but I do not see the new episode. Is this just a bug, and we’ll see that, and Scoutcast, on iTunes soon?

  2. In addition to the RSS feed, how about properly tagging the MP3 files (along with not naming the file “audio.mp3″) so they will index in our music libraries properly.

  3. Agree – with some of these comments above: this is not really a podcast until there is a “feed” associated with it. Until then it is just a bunch of mp3 files. Want to listen to it as a podcast!

  4. I haven’t seen any responses to the RSS comments and I am a newbie to pod casts so have to ask. Is an RSS feed what needs to happen so that I can somehow subscribe? I am not good at remembering to check websites to see if new items have been posted.

    • Correct Connie,
An RSS Feed is basically a listing of episodes and information about each podcast including where the actual audio file is. This allows podcasting apps or subscription based services to check periodically to see if there are new episodes. That way you just have to check your one app or program and it looks at all the different podcasts you may be interested in. Currently right now it looks like National only has that one page for each podcast and you have to manually go and check for new episodes.
