What's New

For the first time, Venturers can attend the national Scout jamboree

New location, new eligibility rules.

The 2013 National Scout Jamboree, the first jamboree at the The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, will also be the first to welcome Venturers as participants.

That’s right, the jamboree isn’t just for Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts anymore.

Crew members must have a current BSA membership with a Venturing crew and must have graduated the 8th grade or be at least 14 years of age by the first day of the jamboree, but they can’t have reached their 21st birthday by the last day of the jamboree. Here’s the full list of qualifications.

Previously, Venturers could serve on staff at national jamborees but weren’t eligible participants. That all changes in 2013, meaning the doors to the BSA’s signature event just opened a little wider.

So tell your Venturing crew to get ready, because the registration window opens in late spring of this year.

  1. That is excellent news Brian! Sounds like my whole family is going to be able to register to go to the first jambo at the Summit! My daughter will be 14 and have completed 8th grade the spring of 2013 – is there a way for youth who are not yet eligible (but will be by the time of jambo) to submit a registration so they don’t miss out on a spot?

    • The minimum requirements are based on the first day of the jamboree — July 15, 2013. So as long as your daughter will be old enough by that date, she can register as soon as the window opens.

I tried to register my daughter this evening. The application requested a link from my account to my daughters (needs BSA membership number). She isn’t old enough YET but will be. How do I get around the lack of a BSA membership number?

  2. We’re quite excited that Venturers will be included in the 2013 Jamboree but it will not the the first time coed units have been there. There was a coed Exploring unit at the 1989 Jamboree as participants, not staff. I believe there were 22 females in the unit.

Venturers were formed here in New Zealand in the early 1960’s and attended their first Jamboree in Wellington in the summer of 1964/65 and it was awesome! I know – I was one of those Venturers! For some years they have held their own version (“Venture”) and these events are always successful, and also some may attend a Scout Jamboree as staff. Best of luck to all attendees.
