Dallas troop makes history with 12 African American Eagle Scouts

610127 Troop 914 has a lot to be proud of this month. On Saturday, 11 of its Scouts earned the Eagle Scout rank at a single ceremony.

A 12th boy earned Eagle as well, but he was away at college and wasn't able to formally accept his award.

Twelve Eagles at one time is an impressive number for any troop, but it's nearly a record for a group of African American Scouts, according to a story in The Dallas Morning News

Pat Currie, Circle Ten Council's Scout executive, told the newspaper just how impressive this feat was.

"As far as we can determine there's only been one other time in the history of the Boy Scouts where there were more African Americans at one time, from one troop" becoming Eagle Scouts, he was quoted as saying.

The accomplishment is the culmination of years of hard work from Troop 914's Scouts and Scouters. When the troop began in 1996, it had just six boys, two tents, and one piece of outdoor cooking gear, according to The Dallas Morning News. Since then, the troop has added nearly 40 Eagle Scouts to the record books.
