Name That Council: August 21, 2009 solution

Last week’s challenge featured a council that shares its
name with a massive lake. It’s so big, we told you, that it ranks in the top 10
of the world’s deepest lakes.

Did you figure out the council’s name from those clues? Jay Fox, a Wolf den leader from Sugar
Hill, Ga., sure did. He was the first to respond with the right answer. Read on
to find out if you also got it right.

16-Crater-Lake

It’s Crater Lake Council, which serves Southern
Oregon and Northern California. The council’s name comes from the deep lake
formed when a volcano collapsed thousands of years ago.

The lake, the deepest in the U.S., has a maximum depth of
1,949 feet. That’s good enough to rank ninth on the list of the world’s deepest
lakes but doesn’t come close to Lake Baikal, the deepest and most voluminous
lake in the world. Located in Siberia, Russia, Lake Baikal measures more than a
mile at its deepest point. It also holds more water than all of the Great Lakes
combined.

Who wants to go for a swim?

Kudos to Matthew Flitton and John Wetherbie for also coming up with the right answer so quickly. We’ll be back on Friday with the new Name That Council
challenge.
